The Science of Everyday Thinking
How to think better, argue more clearly, and make choices you won't regret.
The psychology of everyday thinking: why people believe strange things, how opinions shift, why our expectations quietly bias what we see, and what actually helps us decide well. The topics run from placebos and the paranormal to medicine and miracles.
A decade on edX pulled in more than half a million enrollees worldwide and a spot among the Top 100 most popular online courses of all time. UQ's edX partnership has now concluded, but every video stays free on YouTube.

The Science of Everyday Thinking

The on-campus version pairs independent video study with in-class discussion and practical exercises. Students watch the lectures at their own pace, then spend class time digging into the material.
Along the way we've recorded talks with 21 leading thinkers from around the world, among them Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman and the MythBusters (Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman), on everything from hindsight to horoscopes.

Judgement & Decision Making

What happens in the mind when we make a decision? The course covers heuristics and biases, dual-process theories, insight and metacognition, and decision-making under uncertainty, with applications in medicine, law, and education.
AI tools run throughout the course. They help unpack hard ideas, but their limitations are on display too. Students learn to judge AI-generated content critically and put these tools to work sharpening their own reasoning.
